Why the Bells Line of Road return — via Mount Tomah and Bilpin cider country — is often the highlight of a Blue Mountains escape.
Two roads up — pick the scenic one
Most Sydney visitors drive up and back via the Great Western Highway and M4. It is fast and direct. The Bells Line of Road is the alternative — slower, more scenic, and the route most locals prefer when there's no rush.
On a two- or three-day escape, our recommended pattern is up via the M4 (fast arrival, more time in the mountains) and back via Bells Line (slow afternoon return with a cellar-door stop). It turns the drive home into part of the trip rather than a chore.
Mount Tomah Botanic Garden
The Blue Mountains Botanic Garden at Mount Tomah is the cool-climate sister to the Royal Botanic Garden in Sydney. Set on a basalt-capped peak with sweeping views, it is exceptional in spring, autumn and on clear winter days. Allow 60–90 minutes for a relaxed visit and lunch at the on-site restaurant.

Bilpin cider country
Bilpin is Sydney's closest serious cider region. Hillbilly Cider Shed and Bilpin Cider Co are the two anchor cellar doors, both with tastings, food and weekend atmosphere. Tutti Frutti Orchards and the Bilpin Fruit Bowl add fresh produce and pies on a slow afternoon.
The return drive from Bilpin to Sydney is around 90 minutes — well-timed for a late-afternoon Bells Line lunch and an evening arrival back home.
When Bells Line isn't the right call
Avoid Bells Line at night (winding, dark, limited lighting), in heavy rain or fog (cloud sits on the road at higher elevations), or when bushfire warnings are active. In those conditions we route via the Great Western Highway instead. As with all our planning, the decision is made the morning of based on actual conditions.

Frequently asked questions
- Is Bells Line of Road longer than the M4?
- Yes — typically 30–45 minutes longer Sydney to Katoomba, but more scenic with cellar-door and garden stops along the way.
- Is it suitable for families?
- Yes, with stops at Mount Tomah and Bilpin to break up the drive. The road itself is winding so build in stretch breaks for younger kids.
- Can we do Bells Line as a day-trip loop?
- It works as the return leg of a longer day, but a full Bells Line loop with serious mountain time is a stretch in one day. Better as part of a two- or three-day escape.
