The honest comparison of the three main Blue Mountains accommodation hubs — what each is best for, with real property recommendations and direct booking links.
Katoomba: best for first-time visitors
Katoomba is the iconic Blue Mountains hub. You're a few minutes from Echo Point, Scenic World and Katoomba Falls. Heritage hotels like The Carrington and resort options like Lilianfels mean you can walk to dinner and the lookout in the same evening.
Stay in Katoomba if it's your first trip, if you want to see the highlights without spending all day in the car, or if you're travelling with first-time visitors from overseas. Lilianfels Resort & Spa, Echoes Boutique Hotel, Mountain Heritage Hotel and The Carrington are all reliable choices at the premium end. For affordable Katoomba stays, 3 Sisters Motel, Palais Royale, Alpine Motor Inn and the Sky Rider Motor Inn all keep you close to Echo Point at a much lower nightly rate.
Katoomba also has the deepest food and bar scene in the region — Tempus, the Old City Bank Bar at The Carrington, Station Bar + Woodfired Pizza, the Bootlegger Bar, Mountain Culture Beer Co and Yellow Deli are all within a short stroll of most main-street accommodation.
Leura: best for couples and slow short breaks
Leura is three minutes from Katoomba but feels worlds away — boutique shops, cafes, antique stores, gardens and the Fairmont Resort with its Ubika Day Spa. It's the natural choice for couples, romantic escapes and anyone wanting a wellness-led short break.
Stay at the Fairmont if you want a full-service resort with spa and kid-friendly facilities; the Leisure Inn Spires Leura is a more affordable mid-range option a short walk from the Mall. For character and quiet, Leura cottages, Airbnb whole-home stays and boutique guesthouses suit couples and small groups who want a private kitchen and a fireplace.
Leura is also where many guests build their itinerary around: Everglades House & Gardens, Leura Cascades, Sublime Point Lookout and Cassiopeia Coffee are all within five minutes.
Blackheath: best for food and quiet
Blackheath is the upper-mountains village locals send you to when they want you to eat well. Ates, Blaq and Kyah's dining are arguably the region's strongest, and Govetts Leap and Evans Lookout are both walking distance.
Stay in Blackheath if dinner matters more than proximity to Scenic World, if you want quieter mornings, or if you're returning visitors who already know Katoomba. Kyah, Parklands Country Gardens & Lodges and Chalets at Blackheath cover the boutique-to-luxury range; Blackheath Motor Inn, High Mountains Motor Inn and Gardners Inn Hotel handle the affordable end.
Blackheath suits two-night and three-night stays particularly well. From here, day trips into Megalong Valley, Mount Victoria and Bilpin are all under 30 minutes.
Medlow Bath, Mount Victoria and Wentworth Falls
Medlow Bath is dominated by The Hydro Majestic — the Art Deco cliff-edge hotel that's a destination in itself, perfect for heritage stays and special occasions. The high tea sitting and Wintergarden views are part of the experience for many guests.
Mount Victoria, at the top of the range, is small and quiet. Hotel Etico (a social-enterprise hotel) and a handful of cottages suit guests who want a base further from the crowds. Wentworth Falls suits visitors who want easy lookout access — the Grand View Hotel and several cottages sit close to the falls and the Charles Darwin Walk.

Megalong Valley and the rural fringe
Megalong Valley sits below the Blackheath escarpment and offers rural cottages and country retreats for guests who want genuine quiet. The drive in and out is part of the appeal — cliffs rising above open paddocks, horse riding country, cellar doors like Dryridge Estate and Megalong Creek Estate. Availability is limited; book early.
Bilpin, on the Bells Line of Road, is the other rural choice — orchard country with Hillbilly Cider and Bilpin Cider Co, plus a handful of farm-stay cabins. Best for couples or small groups planning a Bells Line return route.
