When to come, what to expect, and which season suits your trip — from autumn colour in Leura to crisp winter mornings and spring gardens.
There is no bad time — only different trips
The Blue Mountains works in every season, but each one delivers a different experience. Picking the right time is less about avoiding bad weather and more about matching the season to the trip you want — autumn for colour, winter for cosy stays, spring for gardens, summer for valley walks and Sydney heat-escapes.
Autumn (March–May) — the most photogenic
Autumn in Leura and Mount Wilson is unlike anywhere else in NSW. The cool-climate gardens turn deep red, orange and gold from late April into May. Days are mild, the air is clear, and lookouts at Echo Point and Govetts Leap are at their sharpest.
It is also peak season — book accommodation and Saturday dining early. Mid-week escapes feel noticeably quieter and the photography is just as good.
Winter (June–August) — fireplaces, food and mist
Winter is genuinely cold (often 0–10°C overnight) and that is the point. Mountain Culture, Ates, Blaq and the Hydro Majestic are all designed for cold weather — fireplaces, long lunches, mulled wine and dinner by candlelight. The Yulefest tradition runs through June and July with Christmas-in-July menus across the region.
Mornings often start with mist filling the Jamison Valley before burning off — one of the most beautiful sights in the country. Pack layers, a beanie and proper shoes for lookout stops.

Spring (September–November) — gardens and waterfalls
Spring is the season for Everglades House & Gardens, Mount Tomah Botanic Garden and the Leura Garden Festival in early October. After winter rain the waterfalls at Wentworth Falls and Govetts Leap run hard, and the bush is at its greenest.
Weekends fill quickly during the garden festival — plan ahead if your trip is specifically around it.
Summer (December–February) — escape Sydney heat
The upper mountains are typically 8–10°C cooler than Sydney, which makes summer a strong escape window for couples and families. Early-morning walks at Wentworth Falls or Grand Canyon are excellent before the day warms.
Note that summer is the bushfire season — air quality and access can change quickly. We watch conditions daily and adjust routes when needed.

Frequently asked questions
- When is the autumn colour at its best?
- Late April through to mid-May in Leura, Mount Wilson and Mount Tomah. Timing varies year to year — we monitor it closely for autumn bookings.
- Does it snow in the Blue Mountains?
- Occasionally in the upper mountains (Blackheath, Mount Victoria), usually a light dusting once or twice a winter. Not reliable enough to plan a trip around.
- Is summer too hot to visit?
- Generally no — the upper mountains stay noticeably cooler than Sydney. The exception is extreme fire-danger days, when we may suggest adjusting the itinerary.
