Blue Mountains with Kids: A Practical Family Day-Trip & Weekend Guide

Updated June 2026 3 min read

What actually works with kids in the Blue Mountains — Scenic World, easy lookouts, family-friendly accommodation and food that doesn't fight you at dinner.

Match the trip to the youngest kid

Family Blue Mountains trips work when the itinerary is built around the youngest or least-keen member of the group. Long bushwalks, fancy dinners and unstructured exploration are the three things most likely to derail the day. Replace them with structured attractions, short walks and casual food and you have a great trip.

The reliable family backbone

Scenic World (Skyway, Cableway, Railway, rainforest boardwalk) is the single most reliable family attraction. It is structured, accessible, weather-friendly and entertains kids from about age 4 through to early teens for around 2–3 hours.

Pair it with Echo Point (5-minute walk to the Three Sisters viewing platform), a casual lunch in Katoomba or Leura, and the Leura Toy and Railway Museum or Everglades Gardens depending on age and energy.

Where to stay with kids

Family resorts (Fairmont Resort), self-contained cottages, holiday parks with cabins, or two-bedroom Airbnb properties all work well. Avoid heritage boutique hotels that aren't designed for under-12s.

Our accommodation guide breaks this down in detail — see the Families section.

Food that works

Casual Katoomba and Leura pubs and pizza spots solve most family dinners. The Yellow Deli in Katoomba is reliable, has long opening hours and handles tired-kid energy well. Save the special-occasion restaurants for trips without the kids.

Frequently asked questions

What age is best for a Blue Mountains family trip?
Scenic World and short lookout walks work from about age 4. Longer bushwalks and adventure activities are better from around 10+.
Do you provide booster seats?
Yes — let us know ages and we'll arrange appropriate seating in the private vehicle.
Is one day enough with kids?
Yes, but two days is more relaxed. An overnight removes the rushed lunch and lets you do Scenic World without watching the clock.
